Lab Description: Learn how to effectively lead and provide the oversight, training, clinical protocols, and quality assurance required of your medics and corpsmen! The Medical Directors' Operational Course, a joint collaborative between SOMA and the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP), is designed to provide individuals without formal Medical Director training the foundational knowledge needed to provide effective medical oversight to pre-hospital and en route care clinicians providing Health Service Support to the Armed Forces. Taught by the leading experts in military EMS with experience in both garrison and deployed environments, we will review a history of civilian and military EMS services, EMS system design, principles of EMS medical oversight, the education, training, and scope of practice of the military pre-hospital provider, how to develop protocols and provide quality assurance of clinical care, and discuss issues and cases unique to military EMS systems. This year's course will provide updates to the EMS programs of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, and will emphasize case-baed discussion amongst participants and lecturers.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participant will be able to describe the role of the military EMS medical director in both garrison and operational environments
Upon completion, participant will be able to describe the training and educational pathways of military medics and how it varies across conventional and SOF forces
Upon completion, participant will be able to explain how medical direction to military personnel differs from civilian standards
